It's Over
Peter had denied his Lord, Jesus had been crucified and buried, and things looked pretty much over for Jesus' ministry. As far as Peter was concerned, he had failed Jesus and wouldn't be allowed to be a part of Jesus' ministry even if He hadn't died. But, now that Jesus was dead, Peter was for sure that it was all over for him. So, he decides he might as well go back to being a fisherman. Here's how it happened.

John 21:3-6 (NIV) "I'm going out to fish," Simon Peter told them, and they said, "We'll go with you." So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus. He called out to them, "Friends, haven't you any fish?" "No," they answered. He said, "Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some." When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.

Peter had been following Jesus for about three and a half years. I doubt he even thought about his old career. I doubt he had one moment when he was bored or regretted having left his fishing company.
It wasn't until he thought that his ministry with Jesus was over that he started thinking about going back to it. Why? Even though fishing was fun and was a great career, it couldn't compare with working with Jesus. When Peter started discovering what God had planned for his live, he loved it much better. Even though Peter ended up catching a large number of fish this day, even though it was probably the largest catch he had ever had, he still left it and got back into the ministry. Why? God's plan for our lives is more fun, creates more entertainment, and brings more pleasure than the world ever can.

Some people are already in the career God wants them in. He just wants to put a new slant on it. There have been many people who left their career to join the ministry that God didn't tell them to do that. Some of them never found anything that presented itself as a God-given career. The issue isn't to stop what we are doing and do something we think God wants us to do. We have to go to God and find out what He wants us to do. We have to come to Him with no preconceived notions as to what that is. We can't decide what we want it to be. He knows His plan for us. He knows what is going to make us ecstatic about life and how we spend it here. Don't move until God says move.
