Healing Medication

Day One    Page One

This Week’s “Walking With Jesus” Reading
Recommendation:
John Chapters 21 And Acts Chapter 1

Self Medicating
We all start out using those things WE think will make us happy. We decide what we will expose ourselves to; and, we decide what we will reject. Due to our lack of maturity and wisdom, we end up exposing ourselves to things that addict us and take over our life. We have all contracted the spiritual disease of sin and have all needed the cure for it. Salvation provided the cure from the spiritual death that resulted from that disease. Without that cure from Jesus, the spiritual disease of sin would have been eternally fatal.

All those sins you and all the rest of humanity involved yourselves in was a form of spiritual medication. It was your idea of what would heal you from unhappiness, pain, and emptiness. You applied these spiritual medications to your life only to discover that they were unable to provide you with a permanent solution. Because they brought you pleasure, you used this pleasure as a substitute for happiness.

There came a time when you discovered that the pleasure from the world was addicting but did not make you happy. From that point on, you either started looking for a cure outside of these fake medications, or you simply kept trying to perfect the process.

Length Of Exposure
The longer you continued to medicate yourself with the principles of sin, the more of a hold it had on your behavior. The length of time also produced an increase in the amount and type of medication you needed to use. Sin demands an increase in the frequency and intensity of your exposure to it; and, it demands an increase in the depth of its sinfulness. If it can, it will drive you into a life filled with greater and more perverted aspects of its corruption. However, God has been gracious and merciful to you and kept you from going too deep.
Most of us had to be allowed to go pretty far into it before we would admit that it wasn’t our answer. The enjoyment, pleasure, and feelings of accomplishment that it gave could have caused you to reject any other help. It was necessary for you to see how inadequate and misleading it all is. God knew the true character of all the things you tried. That is why He labelled all of them with the name of sin.

When God labels something a sin, that means it has the characteristics of doing major harm to you. From the moment you were old enough, the Holy Spirit was right there with you warning your conscience. He was there all during your decisions to involve yourself in medicating yourself with sin issues letting you know it was wrong.

Guilt
The Holy Spirit, in your past, and still causes you to feel guilty, when you do something harmful to yourself, others, or to God’s plan. This type of guilt is serves the same purpose as the physical pain you feel when you touch something too hot. It is a spiritual warning system from God telling you that you are making wrong decisions and doing wrong things. He gives you feelings of peace, when you are doing the right things; and, He causes you to feel guilty, when you do bad things.

Even though God was right there with you, warning you and causing you to feel bad about those things you were exposing yourself to, you, like everyone else, went right on doing them. You allowed the pleasures and satisfactions sin brought, to push you into things your conscience was crying out against. God put just enough pressure on you to lead you into seeking His help. But, He didn’t pressure you too much so as to force you to do the right thing. This allows you to be the one who makes the final decision as to whether or not you will seek God’s help.
