My life was going pretty good until I made a mistake that changed my whole life. I was raised to always obey the law. Growing up, I was pretty good at following the rules. Most of the things I was asked to do made sense. So, I started out in life living a pretty honest, straightforward life. I worked hard and did most of those things that were expected of me.

By the time I was an adult, I hadn’t done much of anything that got me into trouble. I didn’t have a record; and my life was going pretty well. I had a good job, I got married and my marriage was going very well, we lived in a great neighborhood, and had most of everything we needed. In a lot of ways, my spouse and I were very happy with all we had.

I don’t know exactly how it happened; we just got to feeling like there had to be more to life. So, we checked out all our options and decided to experiment with some things that weren’t legal. We both knew it was wrong; but, we had started wondering if maybe we were being a little bit too conservative.

We started looking at some programs on TV, reading magazines, and discussing doing things that were exciting but not what we had been raised to do. The more we looked at all the possibilities of things we could experiment with, the more excited and tempted we became. We didn’t want to do anything that was REALLY bad, just something bad enough to make us feel alive.

The first time we did something that we knew we shouldn’t, it was very exhilarating. But afterwards, there was this feeling deep down inside us that made us feel bad about what we had done. However, we continued to do more and more things that we knew were wrong. In a short period of time, we found ourselves paying the consequences for our lifestyle.

I am still married; but, we lost our jobs, our home, and the great neighborhood where we were living. Our oldest son committed murder. And I am having to work on a job that is a lot harder for me. We spend a lot of time blaming each other for what happened. I just wish we could go back to the life we had before we decided to start experimenting with things we knew were wrong.
