I'm Trying To Work It Into My Schedule
Luke 9:59-60 (NIV) He said to another man, "Follow Me." But the man replied, "Lord, first let me go and bury my father." Jesus said to him, "Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God."
The man's request sounds reasonable. First let me bury my dad. What is wrong with that? Disobedience. We don't like this kind of inflexibility. We want to carry out our agenda first then we will get around to carrying out God's assignment. The problem with that approach is the fact that the opportunity to carry out the assignment has passed. This next example is the type of time table God works on. Mark 14:13 (NIV) So He sent two of His disciples, telling them, "Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him. If they were looking for a man standing somewhere with a jar of water, then they would have a little lea way. But, no. They are entering the city and the man is coming their way. They have to be there at the moment that happens. There is no time for any side-trips. Why is God so demanding? He has a timing. He is coordinating and orchestrating events all over the world. Many of the assignments that God gives us are very time sensitive. That is why the Bible says that Peter and Andrew, James and John left their nets immediately. |
The immediate part was important. Those who didn't follow "immediately" got left behind. Here are the things we can count on.
