Once we decide to let Jesus provide us with His wonderful Christian Life, we become God’s child. He becomes our heavenly Father and immediately the Spirit of God starts helping us feel a special attachment to Him. Since we can’t see our heavenly Father, our time spent talking with Him is vital to our close relationship with Him.

We are only used to having conversations with people we can see or thinking thoughts with our self. But, with the advent of technology, we do have a lot of experience with talking or communicating with people whom we can’t see. If we can take these experiences and apply them to the process of prayer, a conversation with God will grow easy.

At first it is a little awkward starting up a conversation with our heavenly Father. We will be talking out loud to someone who isn’t there in a physical body; the room looks empty. Here is what Jesus tells us to do in order to set the stage for beginning a time of talking to God.

Mat 6:6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, Who is unseen. Then your Father, Who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

During our first few times of meeting with our heavenly Father, we really don’t need anyone around making us feel self-conscious. We need a place of privacy where we can learn how to talk to our God without interruptions. And, we need to be able to learn how to pray without others watching us.

The important thing we need to realize is that our Father is there in the room with us. Jesus explains, in Matthew 6:6, that our heavenly Father sees what is done in secret.

Naturally we all have some questions about our first prayer time with God. Here are some questions that God will help you with, as you start learning how to talk with Him:

• What can we expect with such a meeting with God?


• How will He answer back?


• What should we say to Him?


• Should we talk out loud?


• Do we need to use special words that sound like the words used in church?

The best way to get these answers and to get started praying is to pray the Lord’s Prayer. The Lord’s Prayer is a prayer that we need to pray every day anyway. So, this will add another dimension to us praying this prayer each day. It sets the stage for how to start talking to your heavenly Father. It helps you know what to say, helps you know how to say it, helps get the conversation going, helps you open your mind and heart so you can hear from Him, and helps you feel comfortable talking with Him.
