THE SHIELD OF FAITH

That Didn’t Hurt At All
In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Now we are dealing with a moving part. Up to now the only movement of our armor was on or off. In other words, do we have our belt of truth on or is it off? But, once we put the shield of faith on our arm, we can move it around for additional protection. It can be moved to protect a strike against the breastplate of righteousness, the helmet of salvation, or the shoes of the gospel of peace. It is moveable and it is additional.

In addition to all this: The breastplate of righteousness can keep an attack against us from killing us. But, because of its close proximity to our sensitive being, we will still feel the sting of the strike. The shield of faith, however, is to be kept out in front of us; it can absorb the sharp vibrations as a hurling object strikes it. Also, the shield of faith has extinguishing capabilities.

With which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one: When we are dealing with flaming objects being sent our way, having extinguishing capabilities is a very important characteristic. If a flaming object strikes and sticks to our breastplate of righteousness, we are going to feel the heat. In this case we are talking about a fast moving, flaming, sharp object, an arrow. If this weapon of destruction hits us in the breastplate of righteousness, we are going to feel the shock of the hit, the heat of the flame, and the piercing of the point into our spiritual chest. It won’t be able to kill us; but, it will cause us a lot of suffering.

In addition to all this. These words are telling us to add the shield of faith as an additional protection. We are being encouraged to see the need for adding this piece of armor in front of everything else. We need all the other armor pieces. This piece won’t take the place of all the other pieces. If for some reason a flaming arrow gets past the shield of faith and we don’t have the appropriate plating on the area where it hits, we are going to suffer major spiritual damage. We won’t just experience tremendous pain; we will experience great spiritual debilitation. It can be such a strategic blow that we are kept from being able to help anyone else.

Faith is vital to everything we do; but, it cannot be used to take the place of all the other spiritual armor pieces.

What Do You Suppose This Is For?
Take up the shield of faith. Having faith and using faith is two different issues. Salvation provides us with a shield of faith. Rom 12:3 (NIV) For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the measure of faith God has given you. But, allowing it to lay dormant rather than using it to resist the attacks of the devil, is a very foolish thing. There are Christians who are constantly being knocked around by the devil. They look like a punching bag. Everything that comes down the pike hits them.

Healed People, Helping Hurting People
Eph 4:13-14 (NIV) Until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming. This is a passage that describes the results of mature Christians doing their job in helping all Christians grow in Christ. Just prior to this Scripture there was a list of ministries that were all working together to help Christians get what they needed. They were to properly equip them so they wouldn’t be tossed around.

We must all be taught to get the shield of faith up in front of us. We must pick it up and start using it. High speed, flaming, sharp pointed arrows are coming right at us. It is no wonder that some Christians feel life has got worse since becoming a Christian. They figure all this damage is normal Christian life. They reason that since they have become a Christian, Satan must be putting an all-out effort against them. It makes sense to them that he didn’t attack them as sinners, since he already had them. Don’t you believe this bunk.

Satan fights sinners just as hard as he fights Christians. He hates them because they are potential Christians. He fears them because he has seen some of the worst sinners become very dynamic Christians. He can’t trust any of them. He was trying to kill you when you were a sinners and he is trying to kill you now. He didn’t kill us as sinners because God wouldn’t let him. He couldn’t kill us as sinners because God was graciously (benefits we don’t deserve) giving us time to make a decision for Him.
