The Resistance Courses Part 2

Workbook For
“Resistance Through Commitment”

STEP TWO: Keep Trying To Get Moses Committed
Committing Isn’t Easy
Exo 4:10-12 (NIV) Moses said to the LORD, “O Lord, I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant. I am slow of speech and tongue.” The LORD said to him, “Who gave man his mouth? Who makes him deaf or mute? Who gives him sight or makes him blind? Is it not I, the LORD? Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.”

Jesus, help me see that Moses wasn’t FEELING any better. Teach me that there is NEVER going to be enough proof, evidence, or reasons for convincing me or Moses to do what we are being told. As long as I keep trying to make myself feel confident and convinced, I will fail. But, if I open up my heart and allow God to speak power and assurance into my it, I will FEEL the desire, the confidence, and the power to go. Just like all these things God was doing weren’t trying to convince Moses’ mind, they aren’t me either. They are training procedures helping me learn how to use faith in God to speak to people. Moses was a tough one to change; help me not be like that.

More Creation Power Words
Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say: Jesus, teach me that this sentence wasn’t a command that was expecting Moses to go through his own power or effort. God was continuing to speak more creation power to Moses. When He said “go,” it gave Moses the power to go. When He said: “I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.”, it was the power to believe God was going to take care of all Moses’ weaknesses. Help my heart not be closed and my mind be trying to be convinced. Help me be ABLE to respond to the command with faith.

Jesus, as I read the Bible with faith in God’s creation power words, let my heart start to FEEL the transformation and power flowing into me. Then once I feel the power and know the Bible just created a miracle through me reading it, let that powerful feeling override my mind and empower me to start obeying God more. I ask You to help me read the Bible as Your Book and not some human book that is telling me to use my human efforts, skills, and abilities.

Working Around Unbelief
Exo 4:13-16 (NIV) But Moses said, “O Lord, please send someone else to do it.” Then the Lord’s anger burned against Moses and he said, “What about your brother, Aaron the Levite? I know he can speak well. He is already on his way to meet you, and his heart will be glad when he sees you. You shall speak to him and put words in his mouth; I will help both of you speak and will teach you what to do. He will speak to the people for you, and it will be as if he were your mouth and as if you were God to him.

Jesus, it looks to me like Moses was rebelling against God because he was refusing to obey. Show me that Moses wanted to obey; he just couldn’t get his heart to a place where he COULD obey. In spite of all the creation power words God spoke, Moses had long since closed his heart to God. He had given up; he had lost his faith in God; he had tossed the dream; and, he had decided that he himself was a lost cause. Help me see that this can happen to me; I can be such an evaluator of my life that I no longer accept God’s evaluation of me. Moses couldn’t even allow God to tell him who he was; help me not have that attitude in me.

STEP THREE: Committed
And Ready To Resist
Creation Power Words Are Seeds
Exo 4:20-21 (NIV) So Moses took his wife and sons, put them on a donkey and started back to Egypt. And he took the staff of God in his hand. The LORD said to Moses, “When you return to Egypt, see that you perform before Pharaoh all the wonders I have given you the power to do. But I will harden his heart so that he will not let the people go. Jesus, just like it took Moses a lot of spiritual work performed on him before he was ready to commit and start resisting all the objections that kept poping up in his head, help me see God is doing that to me. But, just like God got him ready, help me believe that He will do the same for me.

Resisting Fear Of Death
Exo 4:22-23 (NIV) Then say to Pharaoh, ‘This is what the LORD says: Israel is my firstborn son, and I told you, “Let my son go, so he may worship me.” But you refused to let him go; so I will kill your firstborn son.’” Jesus, help me identify with the fact that it takes a lot of commitment to go before a king that has the power to kill me on the spot. I would have to resist a lot of fears, doubts, negative imaginations, and threats from the king. But, help me see the incredible work God did in Moses. He was finally committed and was ready to resist all emotions, evidences, and potential problems that came his way. Help me have faith in God through this example.

Resisting Fear Of Rejection
Exo 4:27-31 (NIV) The LORD said to Aaron, “Go into the desert to meet Moses.” So he met Moses at the mountain of God and kissed him. Then Moses told Aaron everything the LORD had sent him to say, and also about all the miraculous signs he had commanded him to perform. Moses and Aaron brought together all the elders of the Israelites, and Aaron told them everything the LORD had said to Moses. He also performed the signs before the people, and they believed. And when they heard that the LORD was concerned about them and had seen their misery, they bowed down and worshiped.

Jesus, there are things I am afraid of that I know I shouldn’t be. Help me not just let them go. If these fears could potentially keep me from obeying God, then help me bring them before You and let You heal me. People are in need in a great way. God wants to train me and empower me to help them. But, I may fear people’s opinions. I may fear it costing me too much if I talk about You to people. I might fear messing up. Whatever fears I am aware of, help me bring them to You so You can heal me.

Resisting Those Who Resist God
Exo 5:1-2 (NIV) Afterward Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Let my people go, so that they may hold a festival to me in the desert.’” Pharaoh said, “Who is the LORD, that I should obey him and let Israel go? I do not know the LORD and I will not let Israel go.” Jesus, teach me that being committed to God means I am willing to do what He tells me to do. Help me be aware that there are so many people who are suffering; and, like Moses, I am one of the few people who can be helped to be willing to go.

Jesus, I have problems that keep me fairly busy. For God to add things to my life might keep me from being willing to commit to Him. But, teach me that without commitment, there will be other things that will actually invade my life if I don’t resist them. Teach me that commitment to God, empowers me to resist the things that are trying to hurt me. That gives me more time to do those things that God wants me to do.

Commitment Can Cause Trouble
Exo 5:5-9 (NIV) Then Pharaoh said, “Look, the people of the land are now numerous, and you are stopping them from working.” That same day Pharaoh gave this order to the slave drivers and foremen in charge of the people: “You are no longer to supply the people with straw for making bricks; let them go and gather their own straw. But require them to make the same number of bricks as before; don’t reduce the quota. They are lazy; that is why they are crying out, ‘Let us go and sacrifice to our God.’ Make the work harder for the men so that they keep working and pay no attention to lies.”

Jesus, when I try to be committed to God and it seems like everything goes wrong, that can challenge my commitment. But, teach me that, that is where resistance comes in. Help me always go to God and let Him strengthen my commitment so I can resist all thoughts, feelings, and circumstances that try to make me feel like I failed.

I Won’t Always Be Appreciated
Exo 5:19-21 (NIV) The Israelite foremen realized they were in trouble when they were told, “You are not to reduce the number of bricks required of you for each day.” When they left Pharaoh, they found Moses and Aaron waiting to meet them, and they said, “May the LORD look upon you and judge you! You have made us a stench to Pharaoh and his officials and have put a sword in their hand to kill us.”

Jesus, show me that this is where I resist the temptation to question God. When I am committed to God to help people and they get mad at me, it can seem like their lack of appreciation is too much. But, help me realize that commitment to God means I am not helping people for appreciation. Eph 6:7-8 (NIV) Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not men, because you know that the Lord will reward everyone for whatever good he does, whether he is slave or free. Let this Scripture empower my heart to resist wanting praise from humans.
