Jesus, I am struggling with alcohol and I want God’s help with it. Help me believe that God wants to help me; but, He wants to do it through a special relationship with me. Make it clear to me that He requires me to get His help by me giving up human effort and world training. He want me to start looking to the Holy Spirit for my DESIRES, for my help with my STUDIES, for guiding my PRAYERS, for helping me get Your faith so I can BELIEVE, for making sure I have God’s LOVE, and for empowering me to take FAITH-ACTION with You. Teach me that the answer is: The Holy Spirit is going to help me do it through these six Biblical principles.

Jesus, teach me that at this point in my spiritual growth, I HAVE THE DESIRE of WANT and HATE: Rom 7:15 (NIV) I do not understand what I do. For what I WANT to do I do not do, but what I HATE I do. Make it clear to me that if I WANT to do good but am failing to do good, I have the Christian attitude but am using the wrong procedures. If I HATE doing wrong but am doing wrong anyway, I have the Christian attitude but am using the wrong procedures for living the Victorious Christian life. Help me understand that as long as I have this Romans 7:15 DESIRE of WANT and HATE, I am a true Christian. I am a new or untrained Christian; but, I am a true Christian.

Jesus, show me that as a new or untrained Christian, I don’t always obey the Bible because I have been applying human effort, world training, and am being controlled by my body. I am either a new Christian who hasn’t had time to learn how to live the Christian life. Or, I am an untrained Christian who hasn’t had a mature Christian teach me how to live the Christian life. I am fulfilling the first of The Six Biblical Principles by having the DESIRE of WANT and HATE, I just need the second principle in The Six Biblical Principles of training or STUDY on how to move on from here.

Jesus, I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in MY SINFUL NATURE. For I have the DESIRE to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out (Rom 7:18). Teach me that Christianity only works through the Holy Spirit and Your power. I will NEVER be able to live the Christian life on my own. Jesus, I come to You, because I am weary and burdened, give me rest (Mat 11:28). Jesus, You are the vine; I am the branch. If I remain in You and You in me, I will bear much fruit; apart from You I can do nothing (John 15:5). Teach me that this is how Christianity works!

Jesus, because of Your salvation and justification, therefore, there is now no condemnation for since I am in You, Christ Jesus, BECAUSE through You, Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life SET ME FREE from the law of sin and death (Rom 8:1-2). Jesus, make it clear to me that new and untrained Christians fail a lot; but, PRAISE GOD, I keep having that vital DESIRE-attitude of WANTING to do good and HATING the fact I am doing wrong, bad, or evil. Teach me that prior to salvation and justification, I was governed by the laws of my conscience. EVERY TIME I sinned against the Holy Spirit’s laws spoken into my conscience, I was made spiritually dead. Sin kept me separated from God; I was CONDEMNED.

Jesus, show me that since I have been saved and justified through You, the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death. The law of sin and death required ME to do what is right and not do what is wrong. The law of the Spirit of life requires that I join or cooperate with the HOLY SPIRIT in doing what is right and not doing what is wrong. Help me join the Holy Spirit in this process.

Jesus, make it clear to me that if I live according to the sinful nature, I will die; but if BY the Spirit I put to death the misdeeds of the body, I will live (Rom 8:13). Teach me how to cooperate with the Holy Spirit so I will start DOING those good things I WANT to do. And, empower me to STOP DOING those wrong, bad, and evil things I HATE doing. Let that give me the results that I have been TRYING to get through other procedures.

Jesus, teach me that what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by my sinful nature, God did by sending You, His Own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering. And so He condemned sin in me a sinful person, IN ORDER THAT the righteous requirements of the law might be fully met in me, WHO is not living according to my sinful nature but according to the Spirit (Rom 8:3-4). NOW Jesus, break this down for me; help me understand how Christianity works by using the parts of this passage.

For what the law was powerless to do: Jesus, teach me that all the law of sin and death can do is tell me what is right or wrong. It has no authority or power to make me do it; this is because I have a God-given free will. So, since the law can’t give me the power I need to live it, all it can do is make me aware of the fact that I am sinning. Then when I use human effort and world training, I find out that THEY lack the power to accomplish it; that causes me to fail every time. This leaves me still struggling with alcohol.

For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by THE SINFUL NATURE: Jesus, teach me that I have a VERY powerful enemy located in my body. It is animalistic, selfish, insensitive, demanding, and unloving. Teach me that the Bible calls this drive inside my body “a sinful nature.” Jesus, in my inner being I delight in God’s law; but I see another law at work in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members (Rom 7:22-23). Since this is what I have been experiencing, quickly explain this sinful nature to me:

• For in my inner being I delight in God’s law: Teach me that this is ME the spirit being; and, this is where my DESIRE of WANT and HATE are.



• But I see another law at work in the members of my body: Teach me that this is that sinful nature in my body that is is animalistic, selfish, insensitive, demanding, and unloving.



• Waging war against the law of my mind: Teach me that my MIND is in my spirit or inner being; it is what is delighting in God’s law. Also teach me that the SINFUL NATURE in my body is waging war against the law of my mind.



• And making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my [bodily] members: Jesus, this is bad news, because all I HAVE KNOWN is how to use human effort and world training, I HAVE BEEN losing the battle, LIKE ALL THE REST OF HUMANS. But, thanks to You I have good news; I am starting to take the six steps into The Six Biblical Principles that the Holy Spirit will empower me to use. Show me that I HAVE the first step of DESIRE of WANT and HATE; and, I am now applying the second step of STUDY.

For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, God did by sending His Own Son:Jesus, without You, I was doomed; but, through Your salvation and justification I was provided with a clean, perfect record with God. That gave me all the rights and privileges of a child of God. Make it clear to me that I now have DIRECT access to God and all He has to offer. Teach me that, that perfect record also gave me DIRECT access to the power of the Holy Spirit. But, because I don’t know some vital, Biblical truths, I am living in the Romans chapter seven life. HOWEVER, step by step I am STUDYING and moving into the Romans chapter eight life.

For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, God did by sending His Own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering: Jesus, help me understand that when I accepted Your death as my death to all my past, present, and future sins, I also accepted Your life of being raised from the dead as my life. Jesus, this is may statement of faith: I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but You live in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in You, the Son of God, Who loved me and gave Yourself for me (Gal 2:20). Teach me that the Holy Spirit is giving me Your power-life. That empowers me to win over my issues with alcohol and every other problem in my life.

For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, God did by sending His Own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering. And so He condemned sin in sinful man. I now let You help me understand what Your condemning sin in sinful man means:

1. Because of what You did in my place, I accepted Your death and resurrection from the dead as my death and my life.


2. Because I accepted Your death and resurrection from the dead as my death and my life, I NOW have a clean, perfect record with God.


3. Because I have a clean, perfect record with God. I have the Holy Spirit living inside my body.


4. Because I have the Holy Spirit living inside my body, I have DIRECT access to all God has to offer me.


5. Because I have DIRECT access to all God has to offer me, I can allow YOU to teach me how to take advantage of it.

For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, God did by sending His Own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering. And so He condemned sin in sinful man, IN ORDER THAT the righteous requirements of the law might be fully met in us: Jesus, make it clear to me that my clean, perfect record with God gave me DIRECT access to all my heavenly Father has to offer IN ORDER THAT the righteous requirements of the law might be fully met in ME! In other words, my clean, perfect record GRADUALLY starts becoming a reality in my life. All those things I am currently being credited for through grace and mercy will start flowing out of me into my relationships with myself and those around me. Teach me that the laws of God were pointing me in the right direction, I just didn’t know how to apply The Six Biblical Principles to getting it flowing into and through my life.

For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, God did by sending His Own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering. And so He condemned sin in sinful man, IN ORDER THAT the righteous requirements of the law might be fully met in us, WHO do not live according to the sinful nature: Jesus, teach me that all my emotions that are negative, hurtful, and damaging are now being brought under my control through the power of the Holy Spirit. Even though I can’t actually change my heart that is producing emotions that are debilitating, hindering, and controlling me, I and the Holy Spirit can crowd them out with emotions that are healing, empowering, and setting me free.

WHO do not live according to the sinful nature: Jesus, sometimes I think that the sinful nature only deals with murder, hate, cheating, lying, or coveting other people’s things. Help me understand that The sinful nature involves ALL those things that are hurting me. Show me that if I live according to the sinful nature, it will produce emotions of depression, discouragement, anger, frustration, greed, covetousness, desires for revenge, and all sorts of negative emotions in my heart. Jesus, teach me how to stop living according to the sinful nature so it will empower me to submit my emotions to You. You will give me positive emotions that will fill my day with love, joy, excitement, happiness, and positive expectations.

For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, God did by sending His Own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering. And so He condemned sin in sinful man, IN ORDER THAT the righteous requirements of the law might be fully met in us, WHO do not live according to the sinful nature but according to the Spirit:

1. Jesus, teach me that the first step into living according to the Spirit is to DESIRE to submit my emotions to You.


2. The second step into living according to the Spirit is to learn how to submit my emotions to You through the STUDY of the Bible.


3. The third step into living according to the Spirit is to PRAY and ask God to empower me to submit my emotions to You.

Teach me that this is what You and I will be doing next; You and I are currently applying the principle of STUDY into living according to the Spirit Next, in the workbook, You and I will work together to PRAY and ask God to empower me to live according to the Spirit. I have the DESIRE of WANT and HATE. I just STUDIED these Biblical truths with You in the textbook; and now, I just PRAYED to You and asked You to empower me to live according to the Spirit in this workbook. Help me see how The Six Biblical Principles direct my attention to God rather than me having to apply my world training or human effort to living according to the Spirit.
