Double Standards
Mat 7:3 (NIV) Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?
We only start judging people when we see ourselves in a superior spiritual level over them. This Scripture helps us see ourselves in a proper light. With Jesus talking to us about not judging others, He tells us what our current spiritual condition is. We have a plank in our own eye. Anytime we go to help someone with any spiritual condition we must come to them in an inferior spiritual condition. At first that doesn’t make any sense. How can a person in an inferior condition help someone in a superior condition? That is the way all of Christianity works. Phil 2:3 (NIV) Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. The first are last and the last are first. The greatest in the kingdom of God is the servant. |
If we want to have then we have to give. If we want to save our life then we have to lose it. On and on it goes. If we want to help someone with a spiritual problem, we have to realize that we have a plank in our eye and the person we are helping has a speck in theirs. Why? Because God resists the proud and gives grace to the humble.
Rom 12:3 (NIV) For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the measure of faith GOD HAS GIVEN YOU. All we have to do to block off God ministering through us to someone’s needs is to consider ourselves superior to the person we are ministering to. We aren’t ministering to them from our spiritual power or spiritual accomplishments. We aren’t coming to them because of who we are or what kind of spiritual accomplishments we have achieved. We are coming to bring God and what He can do. We are nothing; He is everything. So, before we go to help someone with their problems we have to do some spiritual preparation for ourselves. Ask God to help you with this attitude. |
