Now let’s look at the Scripture that tells us that helping people with their physical needs (good works) doesn’t save us.

Eph 2:8-9 (NIV) For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God--not by works, so that no one can boast.

Salvation is a gift. However, we are not saved if we don’t do good works. I know that seems a little confusing and is difficult for us ministers to explain; but, it is somewhat of a complex situation. The best way to help the people you are mentoring and ministering to, to understand it is to go on to the next Scripture in Ephesians.
