This Makes Loving Your Enemies Easier
Mark 8:34-38 (NIV) Then He called the crowd to Him along with His disciples and said: “If anyone would come after Me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for Me and for the gospel will save it.
What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul? If anyone is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when He comes in His Father’s glory with the holy angels.”

When we look at the sacrifices of Jesus and the way Stephen and so many others took up their cross and followed Jesus, it makes a second slap, mile, or garment seem insignificant. The difference between what we are being instructed to do in turning the other cheek and what Stephen was going through is purpose. The second slap, mile, or garment is to be used for a witnessing tool to help people see the love of God. Stephen was being persecuted for the message he was preaching.
Being willing to help someone who may never get another chance to see Christianity in action is one thing. Being persecuted by those who are rejecting the message of Christ is another. Exhibiting God’s love to a potential convert to Christ is an eternal issue. Being persecuted by those who have already made up their minds or are extremely hostile at the moment is another issue.
