Mat 5:3-12 (NIV) Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.  Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.  Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.  Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.  Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.  Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.  Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.  Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Let’s listen to Jesus as He outlines our basic spiritual needs:

Spiritual Component One

Mat 5:3 Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Luke 6:20 (NIV) Looking at His disciples, He said: “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.”
The book of Luke leaves out the “in spirit” part. The Matthew “in spirit” aids those of us who struggle with spiritual concepts. We would probably have built a doctrine of poverty around this passage in Luke. Jesus isn’t talking about money, as I am sure you know. He is talking about a poverty that brings the Kingdom of God into us.

John 4:24 (NIV) God is spirit, and His worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth.

Our poor spirit needs a Spirit. Jesus is talking about a person who is poor in spirit and knows they are poor in their spirit. The very first aspect of our being poor in spirit is coming to God for salvation.
