Mat 5:43-47 (NIV) You have heard that it was said, “Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.” But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that?

The Rewards Make It Worth The Suffering
If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? A lot of the reason some Christians don’t really get involved in the deeper activities of the Kingdom of heaven is because they have no idea how God’s reward system works. When Jesus asks: “What reward will you get,” we have no idea what He is talking about. We only know about the reward of going to heaven. What other rewards are there?

Jesus is telling us how to get ready for a more rewarding eternity.
He is trying to raise our eyes to a Christian life that reaches out to the very best God has to offer. There are Christians, mentors, and ministers who are not preparing new and untrained Christians for the total aspects of Christianity and eternity. They aren’t teaching them about the rewards.

Since many Christians don’t understand God’s reward system, they don’t see any need to love their enemies and pray for those who persecute them. They don’t know that they will be receiving great rewards for being willing to suffer for the cause of Jesus.
