Mat 5:3-12 (NIV) Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.  Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.  Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.  Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.  Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.  Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.  Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.  Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Now This Is Going To Make Things A Lot Easier
Now the Spirit lives inside the Christian Spirit-to-spirit. Why does God want this? So we will have a relationship with Him. God is big on having a relationship with us. In the garden, God was able to walk and talk with Adam and Eve in the cool of the evening. With Moses, God was able to talk to him face-to-face. Now God can talk to His people Spirit-to-spirit. God, getting in direct contact with us, can really open up our relationship with Him. The challenge was getting God’s Spirit inside us without killing us.

So, first, Jesus came as God’s solution for God walking around with us and not killing us (Emanuel: God WITH us).
Then, when Jesus’ blood was shed, we started experiencing God’s miracle of Him being able to come inside us. God can now communicate and associate with us Spirit-to-spirit. The lines of communication can now open up and a wonderful relationship can be built. The next big challenge is getting us to let all this happen. This process of “letting” these things happen is called being poor in spirit. We will only LET God do something in our lives if we can see that it is needed and beneficial.

The first moment we realized that our poor spirit needed the Holy Spirit is the moment the Father started to reveal our need of a Savior. Those who listened to the Father and came to Jesus, did so by allowing themselves to become poor in spirit.
