Legally, Our Hands Are Tied
Mat 5:32 (NIV) But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, causes her to become an adulteress, and anyone who marries the divorced woman commits adultery.
Other than adultery, there are no grounds for divorce as far as God is concerned. This puts a lot of ministers in quite a tough spot. A spouse is being destroyed verbally or physically and they feel there is nothing the abused spouse can do about it.

Turning the other cheek becomes a lifetime of terror. This isn’t showing much love from the church. If we can watch a spouse suffer while we make sure they keep the law, we need to spend some intense time in Jesus’ disciple training system. If we would be willing to protect our animals from other abusive animals, how much more should we be willing to protect an abused spouse. There are a lot of things we are able to do to protect them if we truly act as a loving church. We won’t have to break any laws of the land or laws of God and we will still be able to protect the innocent.
