Welcome To
Jesus’ Sermon On The Mount

Study Fourteen

The Holy Spirit is your focus for bringing the life and ministry of Jesus into your life and ministry. Jesus focused His attention and life on the Word of God. As we compare the way He handled satanic temptation with the way Adam and Eve handled it, you will be able to see Jesus’ principles for life. The light of God’s Word keeps us able to see what is truth and what is a lie.

Jesus’ Temptation
Mat 4:1-4 (NIV) Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. After fasting forty days and forty nights, He was hungry. The tempter came to Him and said, “If You are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

Mat 4:5-7 (NIV) Then the devil took Him to the holy city and had Him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If You are the Son of God,” he said, “throw Yourself down. For it is written: “‘He will command His angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’” Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’”

Mat 4:8-11 (NIV) Again, the devil took Him to a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. “All this I will give You,” he said, “if You will bow down and worship me.” Jesus said to him, “Away from Me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only.’” Then the devil left Him, and angels came and attended Him.

Three temptations and three Scriptures from Jesus, no discussions, no arguments, no explanation, and no human reasoning. Satan gives Jesus his best efforts and Jesus wins hands down. You can see how Jesus thinks; He thinks Scripture. You can see where Jesus spends His time, in the Bible. His desires, His study, His prayer, His faith, and His faith-action has been locked into becoming knowledgeable and skilled in God’s Word. Now let’s take a look at Adam and Eve in the garden. You will see that they used a little bit different technique in dealing with the devil.

Adam And Eve’s Temptation
Gen 3:1-3 (NIV) Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden?’” The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’”

Gen 3:4-7 (NIV) “You will not surely die,” the serpent said to the woman. “For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.

You can see that Adam and Eve aren’t settled on the Word of God.

This is what God said: Gen 2:16 (NIV) And the LORD God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die.”

This is what Eve said: Gen 3:2-3 (NIV) “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’”

They aren’t quoting God’s words as final authority; their view of God’s words is still open for discussion. Their mind hasn’t been made up and sealed by God’s Word. He isn’t God in their life; they are god over their life. They are still deciding what is best for them. They can be convinced to go directly against what God said, if someone can prove to them that it is a better way. Satan laid out a trap for them and they looked it over, analyzed it, and decided that Satan MADE SENSE.

Jesus Based His Life On Fulfilling Scripture
Mat 21:1-5 (NIV) As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to Me. If anyone says anything to you, tell him that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away.”
This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet: “Say to the Daughter of Zion, ‘See, your King comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’”

Mat 5:17 (NIV) “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.

Mat 8:16-17 (NIV) When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to Him, and He drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick. This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: “He took up our infirmities and carried our diseases.”

Mat 12:15-21 (NIV) Aware of this, Jesus withdrew from that place. Many followed Him, and He healed all their sick, warning them not to tell Who He was. This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: “Here is My Servant Whom I have chosen, the One I love, in Whom I delight; I will put My Spirit on Him, and He will proclaim justice to the nations. He will not quarrel or cry out; no one will hear His voice in the streets. A bruised reed He will not break, and a smoldering wick He will not snuff out, till He leads justice to victory. In His name the nations will put their hope.”

Jesus Proclaimed The Scriptures
Mat 21:42-43 (NIV) Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures: “‘The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone; the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes’? “THEREFORE I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit.

In proving that there will be a resurrection from the dead, Jesus said to the Sadducees and the crowd that they were ignorant of the Scriptures.

Mat 22:29-32 (NIV) Jesus replied, “You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God. At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven. But about the resurrection of the dead--have you not read what God said to you, ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not the God of the dead but of the living.”

At Jesus’ arrest, He makes sure that Peter lives according to the Scriptures.

Mat 26:50-54 (NIV) Jesus replied, “Friend, do what you came for.” Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus and arrested Him. With that, one of Jesus’ companions reached for his sword, drew it out and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear. “Put your sword back in its place,” Jesus said to him, “for all who draw the sword will die by the sword. Do you think I cannot call on My Father, and He will at once put at My disposal more than twelve legions of angels? But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen in this way?”

Jesus’ Life Was All According To The Scriptures
After Jesus’ death and resurrection, He starts opening up the Scriptures to His disciples and helps them see that His whole life was patterned after the Scriptures.

Luke 24:15-27 (NIV) As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus Himself came up and walked along with them; but they were kept from recognizing Him. He asked them, “What are you discussing together as you walk along?” They stood still, their faces downcast. One of them, named Cleopas, asked Him, “Are you only a visitor to Jerusalem and do not know the things that have happened there in these days?” “What things?” He asked. “About Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people.

The chief priests and our rulers handed Him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified Him; but we had hoped that He was the One Who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place. In addition, some of our women amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning but didn’t find His body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said He was alive. Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but Him they did not see.”

He said to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Did not the Christ have to suffer these things and then enter His glory?” And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning Himself.
