Welcome To
Jesus’ Sermon On The Mount

Study Thirty-Six

Mat 7:1-6 (NIV) Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye. Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and then turn and tear you to pieces.

The Holy Spirit frees you from judging others so you can bring the life and ministry of Jesus into your life and ministry.

Jesus Is Everybody’s ONLY Judge
John 5:22-23 (NIV) Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted ALL judgment to the Son, that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, Who sent Him. John 5:30 (NIV) By Myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and My judgment is just, for I seek not to please Myself but Him Who sent Me.

All laws, all rules, all commandments, all the Bible has come to us for the purpose of saving us, healing us, transforming us, and bringing all of God’s blessings on us. Jesus is going to hold all mankind accountable for everything God has tried to make available to them, because it all is able to set us free. Our heavenly Father isn’t desirous to judge us; He is doing all He is doing to deliver us from all punishment and verdicts of judgment. He is providing us with all the truth we need to be transformed into people who can live a victorious Christian life.

Our Judgment Is ALWAYS Wrong
John 8:15-18 (NIV) You judge by human standards; I pass judgment on no one. But if I do judge, My decisions are right, because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, Who sent Me. In your own Law it is written that the testimony of two men is valid. I am One Who testifies for Myself; My other witness is the Father, Who sent Me.

Our problem is that, if we were to start judging people, we would judge them on the wrong things. We would miss the whole point of the reasons God has seen all the information to us that He has provided. The Ten Commandments were to bless us not to judge us. They were to direct us into a better way of living. But, because of the sinful nature, it ended up bringing us into judgment rather than freedom. So, us humans spent our time noticing mankind’s failures and trying to bring judgment on those people.

We use the laws of God to try to force everyone to treat us better. Even though we can’t live up to the law, we still try to enforce it on all those around us. We have a dual standard. We apply grace and mercy to the things we do; and we apply law and judgment on the things others do to us. God doesn’t have a dual standard. He holds us all accountable for those things we hold others accountable for. He applies against us the same rules, laws, standards, requirements, and judgments that we place on others.

Right Now, Jesus’ Words Are Judging Us
John 12:47-48 (NIV) As for the person who hears My words but does not keep them, I do not judge him. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save it. There is a judge for the one who rejects Me and does not accept My words; that very word which I spoke will condemn him at the last day.

Jesus’ commandments even look more strict and demanding than the Ten Commandments. The standard He set and is holding us to is by far more difficult; it is actually impossible for us to live on our own. But, it has something that all other laws and judgments do not have. Jesus’ words come with power. The Holy Spirit is taking the life, words, ministry, and methods of Jesus and empowering us to be able to live them. So, if we end up being judged by them, it is a pure and holy judgment. They gave us the ability to live them and we refused to use their power to live the life He gave us.

Jesus’ Life And Ministry Are For Salvation Not Judgment
John 3:16-18 (NIV) For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him. Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.

The main issue we need to face is the purpose for why Jesus came to live here on earth. We need to realize why Jesus did and said all the things He did and said. Jesus didn’t come to hold us accountable to a higher standard. He came to give us a life that was far better than anything we could imagine. The higher standard wasn’t just higher so it could bring us into greater judgment. It was to empower us to live on a higher level. It was to give us the powerful life of God that was so wonderful and victorious that everyone would love it.

The Standard For Judgment Is High But The Power Is Great
Mat 5:21-22 (NIV) You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Do not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to his brother, ‘Raca [you empty headed, worthless person],’ is answerable to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell.

Once we see the purpose and the reason behind Jesus’ higher standard, we are filled with the love of God so we will not only want it for ourselves, we will want to treat others with it. Love will help us be able to identify with how others feel when we break God’s laws. Other’s pain, suffering, and abuse will become our pain, suffering, and abuse. We will unite with those around us in such a way that we feel exactly what they feel. We go through their difficulties and challenges with them.

Luke 12:13-15 (NIV) Someone in the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.” Jesus replied, “Man, who appointed Me a judge or an arbiter between you?” Then He said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.”

The love of God will become so powerful and real to us that we no longer care about the things we want, need, feel, and suffer from. We take all our concerns, needs, pains, and suffering and give them to Jesus (Matthew 11:28-30). Rather than being filled with concern for ourselves all the time, we give and leave all our concerns with Jesus. We pray to Him, telling Him about all our problems and needs. Then we are able to allow Him to take care of all our needs WHILE we spend our time, effort, and money on the needs of others.

Jesus’ Words Prepare Us For Judgment
Mat 12:35-37 (NIV) The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. But I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.

Rather than us going around holding everyone accountable for the words of Jesus, we spend our time helping people get Jesus’ words into their hearts. His words don’t require us holding people accountable for them. John 6:63 (NIV) The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life. We don’t have to go around judging people; we are to go around preaching to and teaching people.

We help them store up the great things of God’s truth in their hearts and from that abundance their mouth will speak. The more we help them learn, understand, and apply the words of Jesus, the more they will speak the truth of Jesus. The more they speak the truth of Jesus, the more they will live that truth through their body (James 3:2).

We ALL Need TRUTH
Luke 19:20-23 (NIV) Then another servant came and said, ‘Sir, here is your mina; I have kept it laid away in a piece of cloth. I was afraid of you, because you are a hard man. You take out what you did not put in and reap what you did not sow.’ His master replied, ‘I will judge you by your own words, you wicked servant! You knew, did you, that I am a hard man, taking out what I did not put in, and reaping what I did not sow? Why then didn’t you put my money on deposit, so that when I came back, I could have collected it with interest?
It is our job to help people change the way they believe. In Jesus’ parable of the Mina, we see a man who had doctrines and philosophies that weren’t true. But, because he believed them to be true, he based his life on them. When it came time for him to give an account of his life, he wasn’t ready. Our responsibility is to try to help everyone base their lives on the words of Jesus. Since He is the One Who is going to be doing the judging, and since we are going to be judged by His words, we just need to see to it that everyone knows what they are.

We Have The Truth For All Who Are Willing To Accept It
Mat 10:14-15 (NIV) If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, shake the dust off your feet when you leave that home or town. I tell you the truth, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town.

Judgment is coming! We don’t need to get involved in judging people. We need to be getting people ready for the judgment day. That is what Jesus did and why He came. He did a great job of preparing all those He ministered to during His earthly ministry. Now He wants to work with you to get the people ready who are here on this planet at this time. Once we stop judging and start preaching and teaching, we will see our world changed by the power of Jesus’ words.

Keep The Impurities Out Of Your Truth
John 7:23-24 (NIV) Now if a child can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses may not be broken, why are you angry with Me for healing the whole man on the Sabbath? Stop judging by mere appearances, and make a right judgment.

Let God set you free from the traditions, philosophies, and doctrines of men. The religious leaders of Jesus’ day were all messed up. They had it all wrong. Their interpretations and applications of the Bible were all from commentaries, books, teachings, and seminaries designed and taught by men. They had departed from the power and influence of God.

Let the Holy Spirit teach you why God says what He says. Let the Holy Spirit interpret His word for you. Let Jesus tell you how you are to apply it. You will be the one answering for the way you structured your life. You will be judged on the basis of how you thought God’s Word was written. Your doctrines, beliefs, philosophies, and interpretations will have shaped your life and caused you to live the way you lived. Give it all to God and allow Him to make sure you are living according to the words of Jesus.

With Truth We Can All Make A Knowledgeable Decision
John 9:39 (NIV) Jesus said, “For judgment I have come into this world, so that the blind will see and those who see will become blind.”

The main objective of Jesus is to make sure everyone is ABLE to make a KNOWLEDGEABLE decision as to what they are going to do with His words. He is helping everyone be able to SEE the way things really are. He is allowing them to “test drive,” try out, taste, and see the truth about the things of God. Those who were blind will be able to see and live in the truth. Some of those who were blind but now see, will turn from that truth and become blind again (Hebrews 6:4-8; Romans 1:18-32).

Offer Everyone Freedom
John 12:31-32 (NIV) Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out. But I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to Myself.

Jesus has defeated Satan and has given us a death and resurrection that will empower us to make our bodies live the life and do the ministry of Jesus. Judgment has already been accomplished against the principalities and powers of evil. We can be MORE than conquerors in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:37). Rather than going around judging people, we can set them free from all judgment by setting them free from the power of Satan. 2 Corinthians 10:4 (NIV) The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.

Right Now, The Holy Spirit Is Taking Care Of Conviction And Judgment
John 16:7-11 (NIV) But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. When He comes, He will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: in regard to sin, because men do not believe in Me; in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see Me no longer; and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.

Right now, the Holy Spirit is taking care of all conviction and judgment. He is holding people accountable for the wrong that they are believing and living. He is making them feel guilty, miserable, and wrong about their doctrines, philosophies, beliefs, words, and actions. He is creating within all people a realization that they need the words of Jesus. The unsaved don’t know this craving is about the words of Jesus. They just know they need SOMETHING different than what they have now. The Christians do know that they need the words of Jesus in order to handle the guilt the Holy Spirit is putting in their heart.

Be Able To Make The Right Decisions
Luke 12:54-57 (NIV) He said to the crowd: “When you see a cloud rising in the west, immediately you say, ‘It’s going to rain,’ and it does. And when the south wind blows, you say, ‘It’s going to be hot,’ and it is. Hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky. How is it that you don’t know how to interpret this present time? Why don’t you judge for yourselves what is right?

Now it is up to each individual person to try to find out what they are going to be judged on. It is up to each person to try to get ready for eternity. It is up to every Christian to try to help every person all over the world to get all they need so they can make the right decisions. We can’t make the decisions for anyone else; but, we can try to make sure they have all they need to make the right decision. If we give up judging and spend all our time helping as many as we can, we can change our world for Jesus.

This Is How We Will All Be Judged
Mat 25:31-33 (NIV) When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, He WILL sit on His throne in heavenly glory. All the nations WILL be gathered before Him, and He WILL separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He WILL put the sheep on His right and the goats on His left.

Mat 25:34-36 (NIV) Then the King WILL say to those on His right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by My Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave Me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave Me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited Me in, I needed clothes and you clothed Me, I was sick and you looked after Me, I was in prison and you came to visit Me.’

Mat 25:37-40 (NIV) Then the righteous will answer Him, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You something to drink? When did we see You a stranger and invite You in, or needing clothes and clothe You? When did we see You sick or in prison and go to visit You?’ The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of Mine, you did for Me.’

Mat 25:41-43 (NIV) Then He WILL say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave Me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave Me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invite Me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe Me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after Me.’

Mat 25:44-46 (NIV) They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help You?’ He will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for Me.’ Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.
