Why Won’t God Meet Some Christian’s Financial Needs?
What is this supposed to mean? We can make it by living like the birds? Yes. They don’t sow or reap or store away in barns. That is a hard, hard saying. We would be better off if we just read real fast through this and move on to something we can agree with, right? That is what we usually do. However, Jesus is dealing with a “you cannot serve two masters” issue. We must not just sweep this issue under the rug and go on living our life. Is this passage true? Does God supply food for birds who don’t sow or reap or store away in barns? Sure! But they are just birds. We can’t live like birds, can we? Birds don’t have responsibilities like we humans do.

It is now that we have to ask our self a question. If we can’t live like birds, why did Jesus say this? What happens in cases like this is, we come up with a really good objection and then move on. We feel like we have successfully rendered that particular Scripture inert. Our theory is, it can’t be done; therefore, it isn’t relevant. But, Jesus said it; therefore, it is relevant.
Jesus applies this passage to us by saying: “Are you not much more valuable than they?” What He is saying is that since God takes care of birds, He for sure will take care of us. Why? Because we are much more valuable than birds. Money cannot be our source; it cannot be our hope; we cannot allow it to bring us our peace. If we don’t have it, it cannot create distrust in our hearts. We must see God as our supply, the answer to our needs, the reason we aren’t worried, and the reason we are going to be able to share with those Christians who are needy around us. If we give all we have left over today, He will come through again tomorrow.
